HONOLULU – Coast Guard rescue crews aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter medically evacuated an ill crewmember from a container ship approximately 69 miles north of Oahu, Wednesday.

Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu rescue coordinators were contacted by the captain of the motor vessel MSC Beijing, a 1,016-foot container ship, reporting a 38-year old male aboard was experiencing severe stomach pain. At the time of the report, the MSC Beijing was approximately 828 miles north of Oahu.

Based on the patient’s conditions, the Coast Guard’s flight surgeon recommended the vessel divert course toward Oahu for helicopter medevac of the patient.

The Dolphin and an HC-130 Hercules airplane launched from Air Station Barbers Point to assist in the medical evacuation. The helicopter crew safely hoisted the patient via stokes litter while the Hercules provided additional communications assistance.
