Coast Guard, Maui fire department searches for missing jet skier

HONOLULU -- Coast Guard and Maui rescue crews are searching for a jet skier who was reported overdue at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday.

The jet skier, Gerald Lum, 51, departed Kaiona Beach in Waimanalo at 2 p.m. Thursday on a purple, five-person jet ski en route to Hale O Lono Harbor, which is on the southwest coast of Molokai. He was expected at 5 p.m.

Lum is reported to be an experienced jet skier and has made this trip before. He is also reported to be wearing a life jacket.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Hilo, and an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point here, are assisting the Maui Fire Department with the search.
