Representatives of the University of Hawaii's Engineering Department visited the Fourteenth Coast Guard District, Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008. A new U.S. Department of Homeland Security center of excellence, the Center for Island, Maritime and Extreme Environment Security (CIMES), opened on the UH campus last month.

Pictured here are (left to right), Rear Adm. Manson K. Brown, Fourteenth Coast Guard District Commander, Peter Crouch, Dean of UH's College of Engineering, Roy Wilkens, CIMES Director, and Capt. Stephen E. Mehling, the Fourteenth Coast Guard District Chief of Staff.

Brown will serve as a co-advisor for CIMES, where officials will study border security and immigration, explosives detection, mitigation and response, natural disasters and transportation security risks. The Center for Island, Maritime and Extreme Environment Security will help federal and state officials improve safeguards for key infrastructure as well as provide environmental information in times of natural or man-made emergencies. For more information about CIMES, visit http://cimes.hawaii.edu.
