to Hilo Harbor oil spill, April 10, 2009

HONOLULU — U.S. Coast Guard investigators from Marine Safety Detachment, Hawaii, on the Big Island, responded Thursday and Friday to a small oil spill in Hilo Harbor. This photo was taken Thursday, April 9, 2009, by the crew of an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter.

Coast Guard pollution investigators estimate approximately 250 gallons of red-dye marine diesel caused a sheen, which was reported to the Coast Guard at 5 a.m. Thursday. The sheen was reported to be stationary and stretched from piers one and two in the harbor to more than 200 yards off shore.

Recovery operations are expected to be completed by Saturday morning. The cause of the sheen is under investigation.
