FEATURE RELEASE: U.S. Coast Guard C-130 air crew popular at Hilo
community open house on Big Island's Armed Forces Day, May 16, 2009

HILO, Hawaii U.S. Coast Guard, Hawaii Army and Air National Guard, U.S. Navy, Hawaii Civil Air Patrol and Army Reserve crew members had aircraft on display for a show at the Hilo International Airport, Saturday.

The event gave the community of Hilo an up close and personal view in celebration of Armed Forces Day.

A half hour after opening to the public, more than 1,400 visitors had passed through the gates to view the Coast Guard's C-130 aircraft alongside other military aerial assets. Multiple uniformed service air crews and maintenance personnel were on hand to engage with the public and answer any questions about the aircraft.

"The Coast Guard plays a vital role in the community every day; however, we have few opportunities to interact with the public and explain to them who we are, what we do, and what tools we use to get the job done," said Lt. j.g. David Corey, a speaker at the event and Coast Guard C-130 co-pilot stationed at Air Station Barbers Point on Oahu. "This event is a great opportunity for us to acquire face-to-face time with the public and answer any questions they might have."

Opening ceremonies began at 10 a.m. with a military anthem medley performed by the Hilo High School band while each military branch's flag was posted.

"The planes are so much bigger up close," said Donna Felks, a military wife and resident of Hilo.

An invocation was given and then the crowd participated in a moment-of-silence in remembrance of those who have paid the ultimate price serving their country.

"It was such a powerful and unique way to demonstrate the nation’s deep gratitude to those who, in times of war and peace, have faithfully defended the country," said Daniel Aksa, World War II Veteran and Hilo resident. "I am very proud to be an American this Armed Forces Day."

The annual Hilo event honors the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces serving the nation, and around the world, and is one of a few venues in Hawaii where the Coast Guard showcases its aircraft and the crews who operate them.

This airport-sponsored event is dedicated to Jim Davis, Hilo International Airport Manager, who was the Hilo Airport Assistant District Superintendent for five years, but passed away in January 2009. Davis was supportive of, and committed to, the annual event honoring the men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces.
