KAPOLEI, Hawaii — In a ceremony attended by approximately 200 guests, command of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point was transferred from Capt. Bradley Bean to Capt. Anthony "Jack" Vogt, Thursday, July 16, 2009.

The 14th Coast Guard District Commander, Rear Adm. Manson K. Brown, presided over the ceremony, which celebrates time-honored traditions associated with the transfer of command. Guests invited included Coast Guardsmen stationed on Oahu and in Hawaii, service members from other branches, government and industry partners and community members.

Bean will report later this summer to Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he will be the service’s Chief of Aeronautical Engineering. 

"My family and I will look back on our time here with great Aloha, but I am looking forward to the next challenge in the new job at headquarters," Bean said as he reflected on this assignment.

A Colebrook, N.H., native and graduate of Saint Anselm College, Bean completed his final Coast Guard aviation tour after having amassed more than 5,000 flight hours in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

Prior to taking command of Air Station Barbers Point, he was the executive officer of the Coast Guard’s Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Ala. Bean was the engineering officer at Air Stations Barbers Point, Cape May, N.J., and Chicago. He also served in operational assignments at Air Station Savannah and at the Polar Operations Division.

Bean earned a master’s degree from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University and later served as the HH-65 Dolphin Product Line Manager at the Aviation Logistics Center in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Bean’s military decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, a Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and several other personal and unit awards.

Vogt is Chapel Hill, N.C. native and a 1987 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He completed Naval Flight School in 1990 and his past aviation assignments include Air Station Los Angeles, Air Station New Orleans, Engineering Officer at Air Station Clearwater, and Commanding Officer of Air Station Savannah.

Vogt completed post-graduate studies at Purdue University followed by a staff tour in the Coast Guard’s Office of Aeronautical Engineering. Vogt comes to Air Station Barbers Point from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, where he earned a master’s degree in National Resources Strategy.

Vogt has earned three Meritorious Service Medals, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and several other awards.

U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, located at Kalaeloa Airport, maintains and operates four HC-130H “Hercules” long-range surveillance airplanes and three HH-65C “Dolphin” short range recovery helicopters.

As the only Air Station in the Coast Guard’s vast 14^th District's area of responsibility, the men and women of Air Station Barbers Point stand ready at all hours to prosecute search and rescue, law enforcement, aids to navigation, homeland security, and defense readiness missions. 

The change of command ceremony is a time honored event preserving the rich heritage of naval tradition. It is a formal custom that culminates when both officers read their orders, face one another, and salute. This signifies that the official transfer of command responsibility is complete.
