 PHOTO: U.S. Coast Guard memorial held at Air Station Barbers Point on first anniversary of fatal HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crash


(HONOLULU) — U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Michael Morton (left), from Air Station Barbers Point and Capt. Brad Bean, the former commanding officer of the air station, lay the final brick in the Air Station Barbers Point memorial walkway during a ceremony, Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, honoring the crews of two fatal crashes, that of ‘CG1420’ in 1982 and of the ‘CG6505’ in 2008.

‘CG6505’ crashed Sept. 4, 2008, while conducting a training mission south of the Honolulu International Airport. That night, Cmdr. Thomas Nelson, Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Wischmeier, Petty Officer 1stClass David Skimin, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Nichols lost their lives. 

‘CG 1420,’ an HH-52 helicopter, crashed Jan. 7, 1982, while en route to a search and rescue mission north of Molokai. On that night, Lt. Cmdr. Horton Johnson, Lt. Colleen Cain, and Petty Officer 2nd Class David Thompson lost their lives.
