Coast Guard Cutter Healy to host open house

HONOLULU– The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Healy will host a free, open house during their Honolulu Harbor port call May 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Aloha Tower.

The public is invited to explore a polar icebreaker and learn about a variety of Coast Guard missions. Coast Guardsmen will be available to answer questions about the missions, the cutter and its capabilities.

The crew of the Healy is spending the summer in the Arctic Ocean, conducting Arctic Ocean hydrographical research and mapping the Extended Continental Shelf after their port visit in Honolulu.

The Healy was commissioned in 2000, is the newest and largest of the nation’s three polar icebreakers. The cutter is 420 feet long and has extensive scientific capabilities. Homeported in Seattle, the cutter has a permanent crew of 80; its primary mission is scientific support. In addition, the Healy is capable of other missions such as search and rescue, ship escort, environmental protection, and the enforcement of laws and treaties in the polar regions.
