U.S. Coast Guard seeks help with distress call

HONOLULU – U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders here received a mayday call at about 1 a.m. Friday and are asking for assistance determining if anyone is in distress.

Watchstanders reported the one-time mayday call gave no position or vessel description. The distressed mariner only stated, “Mayday, we’re going down.”

The radio signal was received at the Coast Guard Very High Frequency (VHF) radio tower located on Mt. Haleakala on the island of Maui. The signal was then transmitted from the radio tower to Sector Honolulu’s command center.
